Diesel generators are one of the critical power equipment in data center rooms. However, incidents of diesel generator sets
being burnt out are common. To ensure the uninterrupted operation of data center rooms and prevent diesel generator sets
from burning out during operation, it is essential to adopt the following effective methods in addition to implementing
necessary technical protective measures before operation:
1. Keep the Diesel Generator Set Clean
During operation, if dust, water stains, or other debris enter the interior of the diesel generator set, they can create short-circuit conditions,
damage the insulation of the wiring, cause inter-turn short circuits, increase current, and raise temperatures, ultimately leading to the
generator burning out. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent dust, water stains, and other debris from entering the interior of the diesel
generator set. Additionally, regularly clean the exterior of the generator set, ensuring that no dust or debris accumulates in the cooling
fins to maintain optimal heat dissipation.
2. Monitor Closely, Listen Carefully, and Shut Down Immediately Upon Detecting Unusual Odors
Observe whether the diesel generator set exhibits vibrations, unusual noises, or strange odors. During operation,
especially for high-power generator sets, regularly check for loosening of anchor bolts, end covers, bearing caps, etc.,
and ensure the reliability of the grounding system. If increased vibration, unusual noises, or strange odors are detected,
shut down the generator set immediately, identify the cause, and resolve the issue.
3. Ensure the Operating Current of the Diesel Generator Set Does Not Exceed Limits
Overloading of the diesel generator set can occur due to excessive load, low voltage, or mechanical jams in connected equipment.
Therefore, during operation, regularly check whether the transmission devices operate smoothly and reliably,
verify the alignment of couplings, and ensure the flexibility of gear transmissions. If any jamming is detected,
shut down the generator set immediately, resolve the issue, and resume operation only after troubleshooting.
4. Regularly Inspect and Maintain the Control Equipment of the Diesel Generator Set
The condition of the control equipment significantly impacts the proper startup of the diesel generator set.
Therefore, the control equipment should be installed in a dry, well-ventilated, and easily accessible location,
with regular dust removal. Frequently inspect the reliability of contactor contacts, coil cores, and wiring screws,
and ensure the mechanical components operate smoothly. Maintaining the control equipment in good technical
condition ensures the smooth operation of the diesel generator set and prevents burnout.
5. Regularly Check the Temperature and Temperature Rise of the Diesel Generator Set During Operation
Frequently inspect whether the bearings of the diesel generator set are overheating or lack lubrication.
If abnormally high temperatures are detected near the bearings, shut down the generator set immediately for inspection.
Check whether there are cracks, scratches or damage on the rolling elements and raceways of the bearing,
and whether the excessive clearance between the bearings will cause shaking,
or rotation of the inner ring on the shaft. If any of these issues are found, replace the bearings promptly.
6. Regularly Check Whether the Three-Phase Current of the Diesel Generator Set Is Balanced
